Estes Million-Mile Driver Teaches Students About Safe Driving

Published by:

Feb 20, 2020 – ALBANY, GA—Students at a Georgia high school got some safe driving tips last month from an Estes truck driver who has driven 1.5 million miles accident-free.

Hernando Waters, who has driven for Estes for 20 years, visited Monroe High School in Albany, Georgia on January 28th to talk to students about how to stay safe behind the wheel. Waters has been driving eighteen-wheelers for 24 years, and hoped his visit would help bring safety awareness to kids on the road: “I have kids and I understand how it feels for your kids to get out on the road–you worry about them,” Waters said. “The main thing is that you want them to get home safe.”

Waters spoke to the high school students about dangerous driving he’s witnessed, as well as some unsafe driving situations he’s been forced to handle from behind the wheel: “You see people riding down the road putting on makeup, reading books, on the computer, and it happens, I’ve seen it,” said Waters. In his talk, Waters spoke to the students about the importance of staying focused and aware of their surroundings while on the road. He also gave them a brief introduction to the world of truck driving, and explained how they could get involved.

Estes Earns Two Home Depot Carrier of the Year Awards

Published by:

RICHMOND, VA—The Home Depot, the world’s largest home improvement specialty retailer, recently gave two Estes entities 2012 Carrier of the Year awards in their respective categories.

Estes’ specialized division was recognized as the 2012 Direct to Customer Carrier of the Year and Estes Forwarding Worldwide (EFW), a wholly owned subsidiary of Estes Express Lines, the 2012 LTL Carrier of the Year.

Specialized has worked with The Home Depot on innovative ways to improve customer service. Together, the two companies piloted several programs last year that enhanced performance and provided a wider range of customer delivery options. Specialized began its relationship with Home Depot in 2004 serving 59 stores in two states. Today, the division of Estes serves nearly 300 locations and will make an estimated 195,000 deliveries to consumers on behalf of Home Depot by the end of 2012.

EFW earned the award for its outstanding commitment to customer service and dedication to the alliance between the two companies. For example, in response to Hurricane Irene last year, the EFW team transported 10,000 shipments of emergency supplies in two weeks to Home Depot stores from Florida to Maine. The LTL Carrier of the Year award was presented to EFW on September 19, 2012, nine years to the day from the first shipment Home Depot tendered to the company. Today, EFW is the preferred expedited carrier for Home Depot and handles an average of 20,000 shipments annually.

“To be recognized by a customer for outstanding work is the highest honor we can receive,” said Rob Estes, president and CEO of Estes Express Lines. “We deeply value our relationship with The Home Depot and remain steadfast in our commitment to delivering the highest levels of customer service that have been the cornerstone of our company since 1931.”

Estes Express Lines Announces Leadership Changes in Operations and Sales

Published by:

RICHMOND, Va.—Estes Express Lines has announced the promotion of two Estes leaders in operations and sales. Al Bucher has been named corporate vice president of operations, and Pat Martin is now corporate vice president of sales.

Prior to this promotion, Al Bucher served as Estes’ regional vice president of the Great Plains, a position he held since joining the company in 2010. His history with Estes started in 2002 when he joined Lakeville Motor Express (LME) as director of operations. Both companies were part of ExpressLINK, a regional carrier network formed to cover the United States and Canada. Bucher went on to become president and executive vice president of LME. He started his freight transportation career in 1981, holding various operations and sales positions with Hyman Freightways, American Freight Lines and Dayton Freight Lines. Over the coming months, Bucher will transition into his new role and will be located in Richmond, VA, at the Estes corporate office.

He is taking over for J.T. “Junior” Johnson who has been in operations with Estes for 47 years. Johnson will spend the next several months working with his successor to affect a seamless transition. Once the transition is complete, Estes will continue to benefit from Johnson’s leadership as a field resource for employee development and new operational process implementation until his final retirement.

In his new position as corporate vice president of sales, Pat Martin is responsible for revenue growth management for the LTL division specifically, as well as the coordination of sales strategies enterprise-wide. Martin joined Estes in 2001 in Richmond terminal sales and has served Estes in numerous posts, including regional vice president of Estes West and vice president of field sales and strategic planning. He will be located at the Estes corporate office.

Martin replaces Chuck Parker, who is retiring in the coming months after 44 years in the freight transportation industry. Parker joined Estes in 1995 as vice president of national accounts and was promoted to vice president of sales in 2002.

“Fundamental to Estes’ success is the breadth of our leadership experience and expertise that enables us to provide the highest quality freight transportation services and outstanding customer service,” said Billy Hupp, Estes’ COO and executive vice president. “We extend our deepest gratitude to Junior and Chuck for their contributions throughout their careers, and congratulate Al and Pat in their well-deserved promotions.”
