CONTRACT LOGISTICS – INTERNATIONAL WITH STANDARDS

Published by:

DACHSER has expanded its worldwide contract logistics network – with new projects and facilities in places such as China, Germany, the Iberian Peninsula, France, and Spain. The network-compatible solutions are based on global standards that are precisely tailored to the requirements of local customers with the help of local expertise.

This year, DACHSER expanded the existing multi-user warehouse in the Swedish community of Jönköping into a distribution center for Sweden, Finland, Norway and Denmark. The site serves several customers and stores 10,000 items on 6,000 pallet spaces and over 10,000 floor storage spaces. A contract logistics solution for the office furniture industry in France is also new: In Savigny-Sur-Clairis a 30,000 square meter central warehouse has opened its doors for office furniture in France. It offers room for a total of about 35,000 pallets or furniture containers (Corlettes). Jobs range from commissioning to labeling, to handling full truckloads and less than truckloads, to cross docking.

Azkar, the new Spanish member of the DACHSER family, operates a total of 27 warehouses in Spain and Portugal, with 200,000 square meters of warehouse space and sophisticated warehouse technology, such as pick-by-light, sorter technology and automatic high bay storage. In Wuhu near Shanghai, DACHSER has assumed the management of an automobile supplier’s consignment warehouse, which is operated in three shifts. In this location, about 11,000 raw material items are transshipped for 80 suppliers in a total of 9,000 pallet spaces. DACHSER has taken over the processing of orders for 55 suppliers and is supplying the plant using the Kanban system. The production area is directly supplied via shuttles. DACHSER is expanding its contract logistics network in Germany as well. This year, new warehouses have been commissioned in Dortmund, Langenau (food), and Überherrn (hazardous materials), among other places.

Five million delivery orders a year

“The internationalization of contract logistics necessitates globally operating structures and consistent systems and standards – in consultation, training, knowledge management, and especially in information technology,” explains Wolfgang Reinel, manager of the Logistics Consulting Division at DACHSER. “Today, with Mikado, our self-developed warehouse management system, we are already processing more than five million delivery orders and 30 million items per year throughout the world.” Mikado is available in 13 language versions and is integrated with the Domino and Othello transport management systems, which were also developed in-house. “This makes it possible to have seamless transport and contract logistics services.”

Completely integrated on an international level

The result is customized fulfillment logistics, which allows companies to completely outsource the management of their items. “With our approach, which offers completely integrated contract logistics services on an international level, customers can focus their entire attention on their core business. In the final analysis, this is what is essential in order to continue competing successfully. “In the meantime, efficient, extremely precise supply chain management and distribution logistics are crucially important for the success of many companies. Successful contract logistics can be identified by the fact that it ‘quietly’ manages the logistics processes in the background,” Wolfgang Reinel notes in conclusion.

Container Shipping Static but Bulk Freight and Multimodal Logistics Brighter for Some Firms

Published by:

2013 Reports in from Different Sectors of the Supply Chain

EUROPE – JAPAN – This is the time of year when companies, whether connected to the freight industry or not, like to review their progress, assuming of course things have gone well for them in the past twelve months. Results have seemingly been mixed with container shipping lacking any obvious high spots but energy projects seemingly more worthwhile. Menlo Worldwide Logistics, a subsidiary of US firm Con-way Inc, the road haulage and multimodal group, says that its cost-saving focus and ‘Lean’ principles of continuous improvement are behind a successful increase in its European customer base during 2013.

The company increased its continental warehouse portfolio by a further 50,000 m² and added a total of eight major new projects for both new and existing customers, meaning full time staff employment increased by over a thousand at the company’s seventeen facilities through Western and Eastern Europe. In Europe, Menlo maintains dedicated and multi-client logistics centres located in the Netherlands, Belgium, Czech Republic, Germany and the United Kingdom with a network which can serve as a pan-European distribution solution for a range of customers.

Companies using Menlo’s services range from high tech, through industrial equipment to life sciences, life style and e-commerce and Tony Gunn, Menlo’s Managing Director, Europe commented:

“Our growth strategy is not over-ambitious as far as volumes are concerned. We concentrate on the development of long-term customer relationships, seeking to grow with our partners; continually reducing costs and improving efficiencies throughout their supply chains. In what remains challenging economic conditions for manufacturers and retailers, I’m pleased to say our collaborative approach has had considerable appeal amongst new customers as well as existing ones throughout 2013”.

Japanese shipping group Mitsui OSK Lines (MOL) meanwhile report nothing really notable in the container shipping sector unless you count the commencement of the Trans Pacific G6 alliance and its commitment to expand elsewhere, or the sinking of the MOL Comfort and its ramifications.

Elsewhere however there was certainly more movement with the transfer of sales and vessel operations to Singapore of the group’s entire dry bulker fleet (over 130 vessels) and the commencement of several energy related contracts involving newbuild orders for several LNG and methanol carriers and participation in various deepwater and ultra-deepwater projects off the coasts of Africa and South America.

MOL continues to demonstrate its commitment to cleaner shipping and environmental and social matters with various ballast water treatment and NOx-reducing Selective Catalytic Reduction projects ongoing and its support for the Philippines following the recent Typhoon Haiyan strike.

Panalpina introduces new advanced CO2 calculation tool for customers

Published by:

Effective immediately, Panalpina will automatically calculate all customers’ emissions from the transport services they use based on the reporting standard EN 16258. This recently introduced European standard includes upstream emissions from fuel production, other greenhouse gases besides CO2 and energy consumption. The state-of-the-art tool “EcoTransIT World” will run more accurate reports for customers so they can develop effective strategies to reduce the environmental impact of their global transport chains.

EcoTransIT calculates emissions for each shipment including pre- and on-carriage movements based on distance, weight, transport mode, and the type of vessel or aircraft. The latter can usually be derived from flight numbers. For air freight, the actual routing – this can involve several airports – is used. For ocean freight, the ship size and speed reductions are considered. Distances are calculated using comprehensive GIS (Geographic Information System) data. Besides worldwide up-to-date road networks this database also contains the geographic coordinates of over 100,000 airports and ports.

All necessary shipment information is sent from Panalpina’s communication platform to EcoTransIT servers where sophisticated algorithms are applied to calculate CO2 emissions and other parameters, such as particulate matter, as precisely as possible. The results are sent back to Panalpina where all the data is stored. Panalpina can then use this data to run reports and send them to the customers as needed.

“EcoTransIT is a proven technology for mass calculations with a flexible interface. With the new system we can run far more accurate and detailed reports and do it much more efficiently than in the past,” says Lindsay Zingg, global head of Quality, Health, Safety and Environment at Panalpina. “Our next step will be to make the tool directly accessible to our customers. Our goal is also to be able to give up-front online information on the CO2 impact of a single shipment. Our final stage will be to include CO2 levels and other environmental data in invoices.”

EcoTransIT is aligned with the recently introduced EN 16528 European standard for the calculation and declaration of energy consumption and greenhouse gas emissions of transport services. The standard goes beyond the usual CO2 reporting and emissions are disclosed as CO2 equivalents (CO2e). CO2 equivalents include greenhouse gases other than CO2. For transport processes these include methane (CH4) and nitrous oxide (N2O), which are converted to CO2 equivalents with a factor of 25 and 298, respectively (i.e. 1 kg of CH4 is equal to 25 kg of CO2). Upstream emissions from fuel production are also included in the new standard, while the total energy needed to make a shipment is expressed in gigajoules (GJ).

“We want to be a pro-active player in environmental aspects. By providing our customers with the best possible accuracy and transparency for measuring the environmental impact of their shipments, we enable them to make informed decisions about the optimal mode of transport and routes,” comments Zingg.

Notes to the editor:

Panalpina’s PanGreen program

Panalpina considers environmental protection to be a key obligation. PanGreen is Panalpina’s global program for green solutions and part of its strategy for sustainable growth. Under PanGreen, the company has achieved global certification to the standard ISO 14001. An internal CO2 monitoring system has been put in place and subcontractors are encouraged to reduce their CO2 emissions. The new advanced CO2 calculation for customers’ shipments based on the reporting standard EN 16258 marks the latest achievement of the PanGreen program.

Bath Logistics, part of the Carn Logistics group, took over the role of being the APC Overnight depot for the BA postcode earlier this month.

18 staff and 15 delivery vehicles will provide collection and delivery throughout the county, marking a significant expansion in next day courier services in Somerset.

Bath Logistics is part of the Carn Logistics group and was chosen by APC Overnight to cover the BA postcode area following the company’s successful management of the TR postcode in Cornwall, which has seen the South West business expand by 500 per cent in just five years whilst maintaining fantastic customer service levels and a strong record of on-time deliveries.

Alan Cooper, Managing Director of Carn Logistics, said:“Carn Logistics has been founded on the basis of providing the best possible next day delivery service for customers. 600 Cornish businesses rely on us to deliver their goods across the UK every year. We’re looking forward to providing the same exceptional levels of customer services for businesses based in the BA postcode.
