Estes Launching Solar Power Generation at Two Terminals

RICHMOND, VA—Estes Express Lines announced today that it is utilizing solar power generation at the company’s Elkton and Baltimore, Md. terminals.

The Elkton terminal solar power system was fully interconnected with DELMARVA Power at the end of December 2012 and is projected to reduce annual CO2 emissions by 254 metric tons. The Baltimore terminal is anticipated to start in early 2013 via an interconnection with Baltimore Gas & Electric. This solar panel installation is expected to reduce CO2 emissions by 227 metric tons. Combined, the offset of CO2 emissions is the equivalent of combusting more than 53,766 gallons of gas annually.

“Estes is constantly evaluating how we can improve our operations to minimize our environmental impact,” said Rob Estes, president and CEO. “Adding solar power generation to these terminals is a significant step toward reducing our carbon footprint, and has the dual benefit of reducing energy costs, which helps us remain competitive in today’s marketplace.”

Solar power is estimated to provide 93 percent of the current electrical supply needed by the two facilities. The Elkton terminal will produce 360,000 kilowatt-hours of electricity annually through 1,232 rooftop solar panels. In Baltimore, solar power will generate more than 320,000 kilowatt-hours of electricity per year through 1,100 rooftop panels. Combined, this is the equivalent of powering 72 homes annually.

Estes’ personnel will monitor energy production in real time remotely from its corporate office in Richmond, Va., enabling the company to translate the data and monitor energy savings on an ongoing basis. Estes is working with Dynamic Energy Solutions on the solar energy generation project.
